Affirmative Action

In line with its commitment to serve the cause of upliftment of underprivileged section of the society, the company has taken the following initiatives with respect to affirmative action:

  • Employability:

    Vocational training programme (Sewing classes for girls - 122 Nos., Masonry & Carpentry (3 months course - 22 Nos. and ITI apprentice training at TRL (undergoing - 10 Nos.).

  • Education:

    15 SC/St students are given the merit cum means scholarship for school education. 11 SC/ST students are getting TRL scholarship for Professional Courses, 4 SC/ST boys, reading in class IV in rural areas were picked up through selection test under our "Ekalabya" scheme were admitted in our BR High School. Their entire education upto Class X will be sponsored by TRL including their hostel expenses, uniform, books and other expenses. This process will be continued every year.

  • Employment:

    Selection criteria has been relaxed in case of SC/ST candidates (eg. Cut off marks, min.height etc.) for recruitment of fresh Graduate Engineers/Diploma Engineers/ITIO pass etc. 11 SC/ST candidates are recruited during 2008-09.

  • Entrepreneurship:

    TRL has set up a Self Employment Skill Development Institute at Belpahar at an initial expenditure of approximately Rs.2 Crores for facilitating skill development training to rural unemployed youth, including SC/ST. The institute was inaugurated on 27th April, 2009.

United Nations Global Compact Compliance

As a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact programme, the Company has ensured compliance to its principles. Employment opportunity was provided without discrimination on account of caste, religion, race, martial status, sex, disability etc. There has been no case of violation of human rights during the year. In the field of environment protection, the Company took number of initiatives to ensure that all the environmental norms are met on continuous basis. On the corporate social responsibility front, the company undertook projects/programmes in the area of health education, self employment etc. Tata Code of Conduct signed by employees of the company served as a Guide for one and all on how to conduct themselves with respect to business principles, values, organizational ethics etc.
